It’s hard to believe yet another year of the film festival was upon us. With all of the busyness going on, I wasn’t even sure about attending any films as I can barely stay awake past 8pm during the weekdays. In past years, I’ve gone from attending around 10 films over the week-long festival to choosing one particular venue to choosing a few that are at reasonable times to attend. πŸ™‚

So, this year, I looked for ones on days that I would more than likely go and narrowed to three that looked worthwhile. The first one we had to skip because of another event that came up. However, we managed to get to the other two.

First up was “Approved for Adoption” by Jung and Laurent Boileau. Here’s a trailer:

We stayed afterwards to hear Jung speak and it was so wonderful to have a KAD represent our viewpoints and our stories. It was interesting that he wanted to focus more on the issue of identity than of the adoption experience itself. Perhaps it is the safer one to tackle as it starts to get too deep and personal otherwise. It was interesting to hear people speak of adoption openly – one man said he was second-guessing his desire to adopt in the future after seeing the film; another woman said that her daughter was adopted and that she was glad that the film showed a balanced view of the experience. For others it was just a sharing of a powerful story in a creative way. I spoke with Jung afterwards briefly and was not surprised to hear that he was close with Deann Borshay Liem, whose documentaries I own and are wonderful. She is working on another documentary called “Geographies of Kinship“, which I have sponsored. In any case, it was really great to see this film and to have it at a film festival!

Next up was “The House I Live In” by Eugene Jarecki. Here’s the trailer:

It was a very well-done film showing the struggles of the War on Drugs and what it has really done to the US society. I’ll not go further into a commentary, but it was a thought-provoking film.

There were two other films that were shown in the film festival that we actually downloaded and watched at home.

1. Arbitrage – directed by Eugene Jarecki’s brother, Nicholas Jarecki (what a creative family!); starring Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon.

I may have fallen asleep through some of this…but overall it was pretty good.

2. The Expatriate – directed by Philipp Stolz.

Also entertaining enough, but am glad that we didn’t pay to see these in the theatre as the TV was good enough. πŸ˜€

Thus ends the fun of the Abu Dhabi Film Festival for 2012!

I have a few thoughts mulling around, but no time at the moment to get to writing on it… So, instead, here are some photos from life here in the crazy Dhabs!

It’s been a rather long while since I’ve updated on my balcony garden.

Things are coming right along, I think.

The tomato plants are starting to flower. My beans are producing baby beans and also flowering. The herbs are growing like crazy and all the other plants are going strong. My only disappointment are the carrots…I think I shall have to start over with them, but all in all, my little garden grows! πŸ˜€

Kayaking in the mangroves has been an activity that seemed fun to try and with the cooler weather, it’s a good time of year to do it. Before MJ arrived, Groupons had a deal for a kayaking tour and so R got us coupons for it.

The location is not far from our apartment, which is a bonus and the mangroves are nice. However, it’s a workout! By the time we reached the mangroves from the dock, my arms were already sore. Poor MJ and R, who were sharing a kayak, were already pooped out by that point.

So, they hung out while I continued on with the tour group. The annoying thing about tour groups, and the group mentality in general, is that everyone has a ‘lemings’ attitude of needing to follow the crowd and be at the front. Heaven forbid, you should fall behind and actually enjoy the sights and not go too crazy with rowing or racing.

Therefore, while I was taking my time as the only single woman in a kayak (others were in two-man kayaks or were single men), the guides kept making me feel like I was holding things up because I wasn’t in a hurry to be with the group. In the end, they insisted on towing me back because I was ‘too slow’! (Oh the humiliation! hahahah)

In any case, it was a nice experience and good to get exercise outside. Kayaking is a sport that needs a lot of practice and time – thus not sure I will be doing it much. However, it’s worth doing during a visit to AD. πŸ˜€

The Al Dhafra Festival happens each year out in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi Emirate.

The festival includes the camel beauty contest, camel racing, date packaging contest, a souk (market) of local items and much more.

Although it is just over two-hours drive (one-way) to get there, we decided to go for it since MJ is visiting. It was a new experience and quite fun overall, though the drive is rather deadly and tiring.

We had a lovely tour by a young volunteer, Hamdan, who is a young 10th grader with beautiful English and a sense of responsibility unseen in any of our students at the Zoo. So, it was refreshing to meet such a nice young man.

Anyway, will let the pics speak for themselves!

On December 16, 2011, Sade performed at Yas Arena in Abu Dhabi.

When I heard she was coming, I was super interested, but in keeping with my vow to only attend concerts if they are free or I’m willing to pay for the seated tickets, I wasn’t sure. The cost of the seated tickets were outside of my budget and so I figured it was one I would miss.

However, my friend – B – was able to procure free tickets through her contact and so away we went!

Having attended a number of concerts here, this was absolutely the best one I have seen. Not only did Sade perform for two hours straight with a one-song encore, but she had style and class. Although her music isn’t necessarily the greatest, I’m impressed at her consistency and quality that has lasted over the years.

Also, the audience area was decreased so that you could feel closer to the performance. Thus, I was also able to see her much easier than I have seen other performers without feeling crushed!

Overall, it would have probably been worth it to pay for the tickets, but free is a great price for a really fantastic concert!

(Thanks, B!)

It takes a while for me to finish projects in pottery because of the time it takes to fire and glaze as well as I can be somewhat inconsistent in attending classes. However, a full batch of items were finished up last week and so here they are!

This time of year is a busy one in Abu Dhabi with events like Formula One, which bring in big names for concerts after the races.

Although I hadn’t planned on going to many concerts this year, I already feel like a music groupie.

When they announced that Britney Spears was coming to town, I did not lament at the thought that I might miss it since only race ticket holders get general admission to the concerts. However, when they offered a contest to win free tickets I signed up twice using two email addresses. I mean who wouldn’t try to win free stuff?

In the end, nearly half the city, it seemed, won free tickets and so I won 4, which I passed on to three friends.

We made it a night with dinner and then headed to the show. It fulfilled my girlie quota for a while, but I did have fun. The concert itself was okay. Britney put on a good show and looks good, but still not the biggest fan….

Anyway, here’re some videos and pics –

One night with not enough sleep and then having to wake up earlier than desired today has led to a tired Tara. Also, I’m wondering if the cloudy weather has triggered my migraine today or if it’s from being tired or a series of sources. In any case, it’s not very convenient for vacay! πŸ™

After the cleaners left, I took some meds and a nap. Sadly, I had to cancel plans for lunch with friends and to pick up a CSer from his hotel. Luckily, lunch was rescheduled and the CSer found his way here on his own. My headache dulled long enough for me to get out to both the Abu Dhabi Mall and the new Mushrif Mall.

At AD Mall, I found a 260cmx220cm duvet. Little known to most Americans, there are sizes larger than a King for bed covers. In America it’s called the California King, which is actually slightly smaller than the Super King size, which is European. So, going with the European size, I bought a new duvet and covers for the bed. Investing in a new duvet also means investing in new bedding, which is a bit pricey. However, if it means that there will be fewer nights waking up without covers, it will be worth the cost. πŸ˜‰

At Mushrif Mall, I got some groceries and then attempted to do some reading at Mugg & Bean. Unfortunately, my migraine tried to return cutting my time short. It did remind me of the good ol’ days when I used to spend hours at a cafe studying. However, learning to study at home is definitely more economical. πŸ˜›

It’s been a quiet evening at home in hopes that an early bedtime and rest will get rid of the headaches. I watched a movie called August Rush from 2007 and loved it. I’m not sure why I had never heard of it before, but I’m glad I saw it. It was cute and sweet. πŸ˜€

Thus has been my day. The time is flying by rather quickly…too quickly!!!

Although I should not complain about getting good help when the Western world sees it as a luxury, in this part of the world, it’s a way of life. With both of us studying and working full-time, one area that gets lost is a regular and thorough cleaning. Since most people hire housekeepers/nannies/maids, who are we to say no? πŸ˜‰

When we moved to the new apartment, there were advertisements for a new company and so we tested them out and signed contracts for bi-weekly cleaning. Initially, an older Russian woman was the main contact. At some point, a younger one – presumably her daughter – became in charge. She’s a nice lady and all, but clearly this is her first professional experience, and understanding service might be something she’ll learn over time.

About a month ago, we waited for the cleaners to arrive and no one came. When I called to find out what happened, she claimed that someone had come the week before according to her calendar and so they weren’t scheduled to come that day. I tried to explain to her that wasn’t the case and that she had an error in her calendar. With no apology and with attitude, she agreed to reschedule. I took it as a one-off.

Last week, I rescheduled for later in the week since I planned to be around. Yesterday, I waited and waited. The time came and went. After 30 minutes I called to find out what the deal was… They were on holiday and someone (the young lady) was supposed to have called me the day before. Of course, she ‘forgot’.

When she called, she insincerely apologized and asked when to reschedule. I explained how this was the second incident and that I had spent my entire day waiting for them. While it may have been convenient for her to forget to notify me, it was not convenient for me as it was a waste of my day. I also explained that I was not going to reschedule another one of my days and that I wanted the cleaners tomorrow morning (today – now) or I wanted to cancel my contract with her.

She suddenly was very apologetic and accommodating. Although she had said no options were available before 1pm prior to my explanation, now there was an 8am option. Amazing! (note sarcasm) So, they are here as I write this. I still had to adjust my time to get up early for them, but it’s better than wasting my day.

It’s amazing to me how poor customer service can be at times here. I know I have been spoiled by Japan, but there are just common sense ways of doing business. Make the customer happy! Also, when you have a customer with a contract, they should get some kind of priority over those who do not…. Is it really so difficult?

Rant over.
