The other night R and I had a very lovely chat, which cleared up a lot of questions or concerns that had been going on in my head.

When communication works like that I often wonder why we don’t talk more like that? What is it that keeps people in general from actually having calm and mature conversations?

I realized that a lot of it is our own fault. When we hear someone speak, most of the time we are either 1. waiting to be put on the defensive; or 2. wanting to get our own agenda across. This impedes open and effective conversation. If we speak with an open mind and do not allow ourselves to be over run by our emotions or own desires, then it is truly interesting what we can learn from the other person.

So, all of my worries were put to rest by our nice conversation. I also gained a new level of respect for him upon understanding him more. I will try to keep this in mind the next time my brain starts to go on overload. πŸ˜€
