Life is a constant up and down like a seesaw.

When I first saw the Korean version of this weird balancing device, I was confused as to why they would consider it play to ask kids/players to stand on the balancing board rather than sit as is the US way of play. I mean, talk about accidents waiting to happen! Over time, I came to appreciate the fact that play is really the teaching of real-life in a more protected, light-hearted, and experiential way. How much more directly can you find a way to learn that you need to find balance to stay up and you have to trust your partner not to knock you off the small little board. If either of you wavers, both are prone to a potential accident.

Also, I found that once one learned the art of the balance between two players, there was a lot more freedom in how one “flies” when the skill is mastered – just do a Google search for images and videos of how these players fly, somersault, and jump in the air.

Unfortunately, I never was brave enough to let anyone jump so much on the board that my feet left it, and am a little sad to admit that I really don’t like the idea of free-flying through the air without all kinds of safety equipment attached to me and below me. My risk-taking approval has a lot of qualifying requirements.

Still, the art of balance is often found in the ability to compromise. This compromise often requires a step forward and out rather than digging heels in with stubborn selfishness.

This week I was meant to go to Florence for another Writing Mini-Retreat on my own. I had booked everything, researched where to go, and was preparing myself mentally when I noticed M had a greyness floating over him for a couple of days. He has a constant state of stress around him anyway related to house financing, so I initially attributed his aura to that. However, when nothing was lifting it I asked directly to which he poured out his frustration on spending money always going out.

A regular point of contention between us is that life requires this outflow of funds. We cannot leave the house without spending money as that is the nature of experiencing life – no matter where we go or what we do. Things cost money. We cannot stay isolated in our home any more than we already do and my own ability to make an income is limited. Since this is the reality, I do not want to feel as if I am a captive in the house or a kept woman when it comes to living life – even if it is somewhat true.

So, when he openly confessed that he felt frustrated that it was going to cost money for me to go to Florence or for him to travel or for us to buy things that we need aside from food, I initially felt irritated. However, with some time and space, I admitted to myself that I didn’t necessarily need to go to Florence as I could try to do my writing locally to save our funds so that he could use the money to take his own break. Since I knew that asking him if he preferred me to do this would result in circular conversation, I made an executive decision to cancel everything for the trip. Luckily, I have long-learned that everything I book should have easy cancellation even if it costs a bit more.

In doing so, M initially tried to deflect and push back his sense of guilt for my action. However, I simply told him to just accept it, but not rub my face in it. I made the decision. I was OK with that decision. I also did not want to be reminded that I could have made a different one.

Through this decision, something magical happened. He reflected. Although he may not say so or realize it consciously, I know that me “sacrificing” the trip caused him to re-evaluate his view on our spending money. Taking our house payment issues out of the equation, we have more than enough money to save and spend reasonably. There is no need for us to feel like captives in our own (almost) house. There is no need for us to begrudge each other the desire to spend or go away for a few days to do the things that we want to do. We can afford it and we need – to some degree – to do it for both of our sanities.

So, like with a seesaw, we have to learn to trust each other and take turns as we allow the other to fly, jump, somersault, and soar in the air with the belief that the board will always be strong below to let us land safely.

If reading my blog posts hasn’t taught you anything else about me, I hope that it has been abundantly clear that I LOVE a plan πŸ’œ. Part of my planning process is – appreciating – what has worked and what has not.

Over a two-year-period, I used a bullet journal πŸ“– style of organizing, tracking, and recording various aspects of my life. In general, I’m a use fan of this method, but it was slightly challenging for me to separate areas as everything was clumped together in one big book. Therefore, this year, I have decided to start fresh with a new journal πŸ“ only for recording my thoughts or doing my warm-up writing before a full writing session. I also have a separate calendar πŸ—“ book to hold my to-do lists and track my activities. These combined with my online Google calendar and tasks system should be effective in helping me stay on track each day. So, this is my literal appreciation and planning.

In other areas of appreciation, I touched on them a bit in my previous post. First and foremost is that we have a house 🏑! It truly is the dream house that we manifested together with our list of wishes. Although we now have to focus on paying it off, we know that this is meant to be our home.

Furthermore, my efforts to find, build, and maintain friendships when we moved to France has paid off as I have a small but solid tribe to call my/our own even in a short time. Though they are all based in France, I am so appreciative of their open arms, generosity of spirit, and love of rosΓ© 🍷πŸ₯‚! I will try to work on finding Italy-based friends as well this year.

Obviously, The Universal Asian has seen great growth and despite a bit of end-of-the-year drama, I am proud of what it is today and excited about what it will become in the upcoming year.

So, these are the main highlights of my appreciation in the last year.

On to my planning for 2022!

As usual, I focused on six areas: health, finances, career/work, relationships, personal growth, and spiritual growth. I’ll just give a quick overview of where I hope to be in these areas by the end of the year.

Health:

Although my weight is not crazy and I eat fairly healthily, there is always room for improvement. Middle-age changes to my metabolism and body shape as well as ability to maintain has been challenging to get a solid hold on. Therefore, I am aiming to drop to my ideal weight of 56kg (currently around 64kg – did I just share that?!). Once I hit it, I hope to maintain it.

Also, I had a goal of being able to do pull ups, which didn’t quite ever come to fruition. However, now that we have a fully functioning gym in the house, I am going to work on training to be able to do pull ups!

Since I think that a six-pack is not likely to ever happen and I actually don’t think it looks that good on a middle-aged woman, I am aiming for a toned four-pack by the time my bikini body is exposed (around April/May). With a bit of weight loss around the middle and concentrated exercises, I think this is feasible.

Finally, my goal is to help support M in his own weight loss and fitness journey with healthy eating and regular fasting – which will likely coincide with my regular writing retreats. πŸ˜†

Finances:

Without giving too much public information regarding our finances, I just want to say that the focus this year is to be 100% debt-free. Given the improved conditions of our finances from just a year ago, I firmly believe this is possible and will strive to ensure that we can happily report that all our income is ours by the end of the year. **This is easier said than done as my other half hates paying bills…** πŸ€ͺ

Career/Work:

As I no longer really “work” or have a formal career, all of these goals relate to building up The Universal Asian. I’d like to get to the point that we are generating at least $5K πŸ’΅ per month to cover current costs and increase other budgets. It really doesn’t seem like much, but it is a slow process as we need to increase our engagement numbers through social media and the site itself. I’m also hoping to increase our team members and writers/contributors. So, again, nothing impossible, just need to stay focused on the prize πŸ†!

Relationships:

This is somewhat COVID pending as the world of travel as we once knew it seems to be gone. However, I want to, at least, see my parents and family sometime this year. It may not be until the end of the year, but that is a priority for sure.

Also, I’ve already put a new time limit on my social media apps from 2hrs to 1hr and my goal is to get to 30mins per day. No more than that! Whenever I feel the urge to pick up my phone or iPad to mindlessly scroll, I am going to try to make myself read instead. This way I can also meet my goal of reading more. πŸ€“

Finally, I sort of gave up on trying to stay connected with old friends last year and perhaps before as I felt that it was too one-way. However, for the people of whom I think on a regular basis, I will aim to make more of an effort to be the first to reach out to them every so often rather than wait as there is no gain in a one-sided battle of wills. πŸ˜›

Personal Growth:

This is my year of writing. Everything related to my personal growth goals this year are connected to what I want to achieve in my writing with the help of my writing tribe – Adoptee Writer’s Experience (AWE) led by Ann Peck.

Therefore, I have already scheduled in my weekly writing dates at a cafe β˜•οΈπŸ’» in Orvieto. Also, I have let M know and scheduled regular writing retreats every six weeks or so. This means I will book a hotel in Rome or somewhere else to escape distractions that might take me away from writing. The cost of this will be less than a short writing retreat and gives my introverted nature a break from social interactions as well. πŸ˜…

With all of this, my goal is to submit two short stories to pre-determined submissions and have a draft of my first novel by November. πŸ™πŸ½πŸ€žπŸ½

Spiritual Growth:

This area went up and down over the past year as I taught a few yoga classes and then didn’t, but managed to maintain my own practice regularly so that it is rare for a day to go by that I don’t do yoga.

Still, I have realized that I am missing the massive benefits that daily meditation brings me. I pushed it aside a bit, but am now trying to reprogram it in each day. I’ve started with pre-sleep meditation and eventually want to put back in a morning sit as well.

Furthermore, I am hoping to read at least seven “spiritual”/philosophy/self-help books:

  1. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi – I’ve already started this as an audiobook
  2. The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield – Already on my bookshelf waiting to be opened
  3. Radical Compassion by Tara Brach
  4. Yoga of the Subtle Body by Tias Little
  5. Bhagavad Gita by Eknath Easwaran
  6. The Mastery of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz
  7. Letters from a Stoic by Seneca

These are not in any specific order and when I say ‘read’, I also mean audiobooks as I tend to absorb nonfiction better aurally.

So, there you have it. My – planning – for 2022 is written in the end of my bullet journal book to round off the book and the year; and now it is here as a sort of accountability space.

Here we go!!! πŸ’ͺ🏽

Since we are already a quarter into the year, I thought it would be prudent to do a bit of a check-in on my New Year’s Resolutions made. After all, why make them if I do not intend to check in or follow through? So, here they are (linked to the original) with some updates on my progress so far. πŸ™‚
Well, the six-pack is in progress, but not quite there yet. Or, perhaps I have regressed a bit. First, I had not yet anticipated the amount of yoga that I was going to have to do regularly; therefore, I cut back on my gym time. Still, the yoga is not getting me there either, so I will need to re-evaluate this.
Also, we were playing around with a different diet which I have discovered is not going to work for me at all. Therefore, this is being tweaked, but I am hopeful that it shall be coming soon! πŸ˜›
The waiting list is in the works, I hope. My client base is growing, which is definitely good. However, I have let my organization and momentum fade a bit. I am not sure why on this just yet, but think I’ll be refreshed in April after my upcoming holiday.
I am taking an online psychology course at the moment, so am happy with that progress. The option for wellness retreats is possibly in the works, but I need to speak to some more people about this option. Also, I am considering signing up for an online nutrition course as well, so these learning options are in the works.
I am also going to be adjusting the blog side of my business website to include more ‘lifestyle’ elements.
In the writing area I am writing periodically to get something together, so there is progress there as well!!
Well, things are progressing a bit slower in this category. The good news is that the debt is getting paid slowly, but we are not quite caught up yet. Since we still have an exit plan for June, we are going to have to step up in this area a bit more.
As I write this, I am on my way to visitingΒ my BFF and spending time with my godson, so that is definitely meeting my goals! πŸ˜€
I am also very selective about my time these days, choosing to spend it with those that I want to invest in and those who also give back to me.
I must admit that I am at a bit of a crossroads with my brother. I tried to reach out and then never heard back. I know that I have not tried hard enough and so I need to give it another go. So, I will soon. πŸ˜€
In the meantime I am doing what I can to at least focus on the other goals. Hubby and I are in phases with going electronics free times, but we are bonding and staying strong together. <3
So, overall, I am content with my progress at this quarterly check-in. I can see where I have not been as good or may need to balance out a bit more. It also keeps me motivated to keep going for these goals I set!!!

I think that some might be surprised that I have jumped onto a new business venture. Now, I am definitely not one to believe in pyramid scheme marketing or businesses that seem a bit far-fetched or even a hoax. Initially, when I heard about this product, I was a total skeptic. In fact, I mostly just ignored it.
However, in reconnecting with God, I also opened myself up to being more alert to opportunities and ways to help with our financial situation. Therefore, when the same product popped up again on my FB feed, I thought I would respond.

Since then, I Skyped, attended the launch of this product in the UAE and have since joined the business of selling Juice Plus+ products.

As one who likes to do my research before doing things, I am convinced at its benefits as a fruit, vegetable and berry supplement. There are enough positive testimonies and as I looked more at how the product is produced, I came to see that it definitely is not a harmful product and if it really helps with health, then why not be an advocate for that?

So, for the price of a brunch for one person, I joined as a franchisee and am now able to sell the product either online or in-person (orders still online) in the country and Europe/UK. Of course, there are incentives, bonuses, etc, but these kinds of things do not motivate someone like me. Instead, I want the product to actually be helpful in making people feel physically better. It is in line with The OSH Network business of helping people become the greatest version of themselves from all aspects – physically, mentally and emotionally.

Therefore, we are working to promote the business. M has agreed to help with it and we have started our FB page called SuperYou to run the business through for the most part. Or, the website is SuperYou.Juiceplus.com.

If you’re interested in learning more either to purchase the product or to join the business, feel free to get in touch or contact us on one of the pages listed above. πŸ˜€

Okay, so this is a BIG one for me/us as 2016 was a massive financial struggle once I gave up work and the benefit of paid housing. Little did I know what a huge challenge it was going to be to work out housing on our limited income. Now, I am not saying that we/I were not total idiots to move into a crazily priced apartment, but it is a lovely place to live…. 😐

Along with some other challenges with our money that were a ripple effect of M changing his job in February last year, we have hit the lowest point I have ever reached in my adult financial life. Even saying that I do appreciate and feel fortunate that my idea of “low” is still quite high for some in the world.

Still, my bank account was actually closed in the US due to insufficient funds and negative balance – this account I have had since I was 12…. My US credit cards are in back pay and my school loan payments are also due. We also owe my parents money since they helped us out to pay for my work visa…. :/ On top of this, we barely make our local payments each month sometimes missing them only to have to catch up the following month.

Since I only make enough each week to cover our daily expenses, which is still plenty – and we have learned to spend much less daily – it is hard to cover some of the bills unless M gets paid regularly. During some months it is a challenge to have this consistency; therefore we have struggled.

Therefore, our goal for this year is:

*3 months – pay off all current debt and be caught up with at least 2 months payments ahead

*6 months – have enough cash in the bank to leave the UAE and move elsewhere with enough to make a downpayment on property wherever we end up

*9 months – be generating enough income from our various sources to be able to do the 50:10:20:20 rule (50% for living expenses; 10% for fun; 20% for short-term savings 20% for investment/retirement)

*12 months – have at least one property paid for that brings in income to perhaps pay for another property somewhere along with our continued plan above

Now, I do not know yet how this is going to happen as we are basically dependent on M to bring in the money. We will definitely be moving from our current apartment either in the same building but to a much smaller space within our means OR we will move to a completely new space either within country or out of country. More on that to come as we know more.

So, this is my brutal honesty about our financial situation without going into number details. It has not been an easy road and I have come to some major realizations through it all. While there is no point in having regrets, I do see/understand all that financial wisdom my parents tried to impart upon me years ago about saving, etc. It hit me mostly when a few people shared that they were buying houses since they had saved up enough since being here and I am completely on the other side of that…. I do not regret the travel that I did or the fun that I had, but I do kind of wish someone had managed my money for me! πŸ˜‰

I take full responsibility for my life choices and decisions. I know I am at least half to blame for our current situation and I did not come into our marriage with blind eyes regarding M’s situation. I may have been blinded to or denying reality out of love or whatever, but I have faith and hope that this year will be our year to work ourselves out. Also, it gives me some satisfaction to think that once we are out of the mud, it will be due to both of our efforts and something that we have achieved and overcome together – making us stronger and better. Optimism!!!

So, I am sure I will be writing more about this as the year goes on, but here ends our financial goals for this year. Tomorrow we move on to 4. Relationships.
