_Steve Jobs_ by Walter Isaacson

Like the man, I found the varied reactions of people to the book to be passionate. The few people to whom I mentioned that I was reading this book gave me responses such as “He was such an asshole that I couldn’t keep reading it,” or “He focused too much on doing drugs and this is suppose to be a role model,” or “He really wasn’t much of a man in terms of a human being,” and so on.

While I was utterly shocked at his methods of criticism and his attitude towards people, I have to say I totally disagree with the negative comments.

Of course, everyone knows that I am an Apple/Mac fan. I have been for years – perhaps from the time that I learned to play Artillery on the Apple I in elementary school. We had a Commodore 64 when it first came out and my parents embraced the computer age ensuring that my brother and I were literate with this new technology for our future. I always wanted to own my own Mac, but they were out of my price range for years. My friends in high school and college were more the ‘Wozniak hacker-types’ rather than the ‘Jobs-creative-elites’.

I never knew the history of Jobs and Apple before he returned and changed the world. The book was fascinating for me.

Okay, I will agree Steve Jobs was not a nice person. I will agree that he was selfish and self-centered about most things. I will agree that he may not be the ideal role model in terms of lifestyle choices. I will agree that he may not have been a great family man. However, I will not agree that he shouldn’t be admired, respected and given the awe he deserves because of the above.

This man and his colleagues contributed to the greatest advancements in our history. Apple products are ubiquitous around the world! There is no denying he accomplished greatness, despite the path he took to get there.

In so many ways, IΒ  related to his personality, philosophy and general attitude. Why can’t we just tell people when something is shit directly? Why can’t we be expected to achieve greatness in everything we do? Why can’t we want each and every person to contribute to the betterment of society and our world today?

Anyway, I didn’t know him personally, so I can’t make any judgements of his character. I do know his products and learning more about his passion for the creation of them, I’ve gained an even greater love for the products. πŸ˜€

Well, my silent period for thinking turned into an extremely busy period of working. Thus, the thinking has been pushed aside and the space in my brain has been filled with stuff at work, an online course and my research activities.

Amidst all of this, I’ve been pulled to a slight halt when yesterday afternoon someone walked into my closed office (though not locked) to steal my iPhone while I went to the kitchen to wash my cups for some tea. Within two minutes, someone took what I initially considered ‘my entire life’ for his personal gain.

While I am indeed upset at the invasion of my space. The door was closed, after all. Do I really need to lock my door just to use the restroom or go to the kitchen…? Apparently, YES! In any case, it’s not the first time things have disappeared from my office, but it’s the first time that something valuable and important to me as a person was taken. That phone was part of my body….

Yet, not having it now for over 24 hours, I realize I can actually live without it. There’s nothing that was on it that can’t be replaced (information-wise). In fact, no one really ever calls me anyway and I can be just as connected to the world through my laptops and iPads (yes, I mean the plural there). Truth be told, I can stand to be less connected.

So, I’m sort of chewing on my general belief that people can have whatever they feel the need to take. I generally don’t lock doors or worry because I say that if someone needs to steal it then they must really need it for whatever reason. Part of me still believes this. Part of me feels a little bit invaded. Part of me is PISSED OFF. Part of me thinks … ‘oh well’….

Which part wins? I dunno. No part has to win after all. It’s just another experience to provide me with reflection to myself. Was that the purpose of this happening? Hm… more to chew on…

Back to my pondering….

Going to bed around 8:30 or 9 or 10, waking up at 2 or 2:30am, laying in bed trying to go back to sleep until 5ish, getting up at 6am, going to work, ready to die at 1:30pm….

This is my current state of insanity!

To ensure that we got to the airport in time, we allotted quite a bit of time to get back to Charleston for my flight at 2.30pm. We stopped for a breakfast in Myrtle Beach and then hit the road.

It was much faster and easier to get back, so we arrived at the airport by 11ish. My parents didn’t want to hassle with the rental and so they came to the airport early as well, so we got a couple more hours to hang out. Luckily, they were also put on an earlier flight, so they didn’t have to wait as long…

My flights were pretty smooth for the most part. I transferred in DC back to NYC’s JFK and then from there was on a 14.5 hour direct flight to AUH. While I understand that there aren’t a lot of options for taking children on flights, I do not think I would torture my child, myself or fellow passengers by taking infants or toddlers on such a long flight. There was constant crying, whining, or just plain old high-pitched child-like chatter going on…. It’s not the little ones’ fault by any means, but parents need to think this through a bit better!

Anyway, it’s good to be back home and with my honey again. Although I’m not quite ready to return to the working world just yet…

Since I was a little bit red from all the sun the day before, I was less inclined to spend the day at the beach again. Though, I have been enjoying being back in warmer temps!

Instead, I went down for my cup o’ jo at Starbucks and did some writing. After that, I went back to the hotel to catch up on Internet stuff, such as posting! πŸ˜‰

For lunch, we went to Fuddruckers. Although we have one in Abu Dhabi that R and I frequent, this one was different, but still oh so tasty!

In the afternoon, Dad and I walked over to the Broadway at the Beach, initially to see if “Hunger Games” was playing on the IMAX screen. However, the IMAX theatre was closed up for some reason. Although it wasn’t yet high season there, it was crowded enough!

We rested up back at the hotel again until my mom finished with the seminars and then we ate at a lovely Italian restaurant nearby. It was a nice way to end our time at Myrtle Beach.

My parents are in Myrtle Beach for a two-day seminar/conference on retirement planning. It’s more for my mom’s company retirement than anything else, but that means that they have sessions during the day.

So, I went out exploring in the morning, but there’s not much to see. Then, I headed to the beach for the day, thus there weren’t many pictures to take…. I did meet M&D for lunch and then they came down to the beach in the afternoon. We had happy hour drinks and then walked down the boardwalk. By the time we got home, I was already wiped out from the day in the sun…

Surprisingly, or perhaps not really, I got pretty sunburned – forgot what it’s like to be in the sun all day since we tend to hide out in our apartment back home….

Here are the three pictures I did take:

On the 2nd of April, we drove from Charleston to Myrtle Beach.

We stopped on the way for breakfast and had a nice Southern meal:

Apparently, when my parents were young, there were Piggly Wiggly grocery stores in our part of the world, but they hadn’t seen them for years. Down here, they are everywhere!

I’m a little behind in updating about my spring break after meeting with my parents, mostly because the free wifi is in the lobby and I’m less apt to spend much time here. However, since I’m free this morning, I’m gonna catch up a little bit.

So, on the 1st, I spent the day in Charleston, SC with my parents. They had both been there before, but were up for seeing the highlights again. Mostly, we did the carriage ride, which took us around the historic part of town to see the cool old houses and get some history in. What was most amazing about this part of town was the prices for some of the houses – between 3 and 8.5 million dollars!

Here are some of the pics from the day:

During the conference, I took an afternoon and called Diane.

It was so wonderful to talk to her! πŸ˜€

Unfortunately, my phone died mid-conversation and it took me a while to get it charged back up due to not bringing a plug converter…so much for all my packing experience! Anyway, it was like a light switched back on somewhere inside of me. I’m not sure how to explain it, but it was funny to hear stories about me and also to learn bits about her own life.

So, anyway, I will have to write more later after I have slowed down from my traveling and had more time to reflect. Just wanted to update on this for now.
